THE DANCER’S KNOWLEDGE –
WHAT ELSE IS IT GOOD FOR?
A two day workshop at Theater Freiburg
FR 6.5. & SA 7.5.2016

During the Internationales Festival Tanz und Theater in Freiburg

The knowledge which is specific to dancers and choreographers is finding a new place in society, from training to creation to research. The years of training and countless hours in the studio is often a type of “silent knowledge” with the stage being the primary outlet. In 2015, a physical exploration of movement and disorder joined together dancers, scientists and people living with Parkinson’s in the project Störung/Hafraah. What unfolded were new concepts of outreach where all participants benefited. The concept of outreach was extended beyond the idea of “help” towards “patients” and became more interactive. It was also a way to confront and rediscover one’s own practice and methodology. The dance artists discovered their training, tools and repertoire in new ways. The people with Parkinson’s discovered a new relationship to their own body’s abilities and the work of the artists. And, the participating institutions learned new pathways to community building and audience development.

Throughout the process of the project, the impact on the artists and communities was so strong and the lack of such opportunities for dance and Parkinson’s in Germany so minimal that a two day workshop is being created to spread the knowledge and hopefully generate more people and institutions working in this field. In these two days, we will offer an introduction to dance for Parkinson’s (a rapidly spreading movement since 2001), workshops, and exchanges with artists from Germany, Israel, Italy, France and England. A focus will be placed on the relationship between artistic practice and community and how offering dance classes for people with Parkinson’s has impacted the work of the artists and institutions involved. There will also be the opportunity to see the world premiere from Yasmeen Godder, Common Emotions, as an outcome of this year-long process.
